Ten easy tips to pack like a pro
I enjoy packing a suitcase for a trip. Whether it’s the anticipation as I pull outfits, visualizing wearing them at my future destination or the whole process of drawing up a packing list and organizing it into a 2 x 3’ space, packing makes me happy (unpacking is a whole different story). But for those of you who dread the idea of it, are avid over-packers or simply frustrated by leaky toiletries and wrinkled wardrobes upon arrival, here are ten tips to pack like a pro:
1. Be prepared. like an interview with a future employer, know your background info. Most hotels/motels will have hairdryers, irons and ironing boards. Some also have beach towels, small toiletries and bathrobes. Save space in your suitcase by leaving these personal items at home.
2. Pack in wardrobe capsules. Start by choosing bottoms in a neutral color like brown, khaki or black. Then match tops and accessories from there. This will also help limit the number of shoes you bring. Avoid packing single-use items like a shirt that only matches one specific jacket or pair of pants. Pack a wardrobe capsule of mix and match pieces that can be easily layered.
3. Opening a suitcase to exploded lotion, shampoo or hair gel is the worst. If you can’t pack these in your carry-on bag, something as simple as throwing masking tape over the cap to secure it or putting a piece of cling wrap under the cap and tightening it will do the job. And of course, always throw these kinds of toiletries in plastic bags for double protection.
4. Wear your bulkiest, heaviest items. Save space and weight by wearing these garments. Airplanes tend to be cold anyways; try layering with a cardigan or sweater.
5. Plastic is your best friend. Friction is what causes wrinkles and plastic reduces it. Suits, dresses, dress shirts and blouses can all be packed in individual dry-cleaner bags so you can arrive at your destination wrinkle-free.
6. Know what to roll and what to fold. Also another way to reduce wrinkles, rolling is ideal for jeans and tee-shirts. However, fold sweaters and blouses, making sure all buttons are buttoned and wrinkles are smoothed before folding.
7. An old trick but a good one, stuff socks, underwear and scarves in your shoes. This helps keep your shoes in shape as well as saves space
8. Wrap belts around the inner edge of the suitcase. Rolling and stuffing in shoes also works.
9. If you’re like me, one of the last things I pack before a flight is a warm hair straightener or curling iron. Slip an empty toilet paper or paper towel cardboard tube over the barrel to protect your clothing from the heat.
10. You carry-on is your life saver … just in case. We all know it’s not uncommon for airlines to lose your luggage or have it arrive a day late. Make sure you keep valuables, medications, fresh underwear and a toothbrush on you. If you have room in your carry-on, you might consider throwing in an extra change of clothes. Also, wear or carry-on jewelry you don’t want to chance losing. To avoid any risk, leave the expensive stuff at home.

I put on all my bulky stuff on me, with a few pair of socks, jackets, sweaters and the biggest shoes:) Plus, I stuff my carry ons with everything I can as well.
I’ve also noticed, since I travel a good amount of time, I have a toiletry bag that is always ready with the essentials, I never have to pack it. If somethign runs out, I buy it on the spot, so not to forget!
Shoes take up a lot of room so best to wear your most bulky ones! Great tip on having a prepared toiletry bag, especially for the frequent business traveler. Refilling and checking supplies after a trip opposed to right before a trip will also be more efficient. Great ideas!
I love packing for a trip as well. It is one of my favorite things. I tend to go on more expedition type travel than resorts. So something I like to do is put everything in ziplock bags. Keeps things organized and dry. Cheers.
Packing light can be challenging. I make sure that I bring along lite weight clothes.
