I possess a special set of skills that needs to be shared. I am the master at removing stains from any and everything. It all began when I was 13 and decided that doing my own laundry would save me the hassle of  clothes magically shrinking and disappearing in the wash. Then fortunately when I was in the 9th grade my best friend and I came into possession of The Modern Girl’s Guide To Life and all of my questions about stains were answered.

First thing you need to know about all stains: Ammonia will be your best friend when it comes to removing difficult spots. Also, the quicker the better when it comes to flushing the mark out. And cold water is key when washing, do not use hot or warm water (it will set the stain).

Did you spill red wine on special fabrics while you’re at dinner? No worries, a bathroom can fix all of your problems. Rinse with water to try and bring the stain to the surface. If this doesn’t work then pour white wine over the stain and try again. When it comes to washing, wine stains can be removed with cold water and ammonia.

Has using bleach backfired on you before? Treat the affected area (yes, you are now a doctor) immediately in lots of cold water. Try to hold the spot in fumes of an open bottle of ammonia. This may bring it to the surface and you can rinse again. Using 1 tbsp. of vinegar in about 2.5 glasses of water can also help you fix the bleach mishap.

Red Clay stains (for the baseball family like mine) can be removed with patience. Wait for it to dry before you begin to treat it. Brush off with a light brush all of the excess clay and then use Murphy’s Oil Soap to rub over the stain and leave it on for about 12 minutes and rinse with cool water.

Any oily/fatty based stain can be solved with dish soap or a spot treatment like Zout (this is my favorite stain treatment). Blood can be easily fixed with cold water and a little bit of salt added. Nail polish can be removed off of clothing with polish remover but that can also lift colors, so try to dilute the remover with water and use accordingly. Wash in your normal cycle.

A great tip to gaining your own tricks of the trade is for you to dirty up an old shirt with stains and see what removal method is best for you and your washer.

I think the day has come. Maybe it’s because it is so hot here in Charleston and it’s only April, but I haven’t seen an unfortunate pair of leggings used as pants in a few weeks. Have young women finally understood that they do not constitute for a pair of pants or have trends changed to keep people looking more professional? If you take a look at Pinterest or Facebook lately you will notice that young people, especially women, are dressing in a more professional manner. Blazers and suits are coming back in fashion and I couldn’t be happier.

Dressing properly as a young adult has never been more important than now. With social media consuming our lives and documenting our every move, I find it crucial that we always represent ourselves in the best way; and our appearance is the first thing that is judged.  Maybe this trend of looking classy and professional rather than grungy and trashy will stick around for a while. I hope it does.
