During the month of November it is not unusual to come across more bearded men then one would normally run into. Is it a ploy to keep their face warm during the chilly winter nights? Has the “hipster” population grown exponentially? Is there a convention for lumberjacks and Freud look-a-likes occurring in downtown Charleston? No. Instead many men, and women for that matter, are taking part in No Shave November.
While many people believe that No Shave November is just an excuse for people to be lazy and save around $10 on a pack of razors, it is actually a charity fundraiser. No Shave November, or Movember, benefits Prostate and Testicular Cancer Intiatives and is a great, fun, way to raise money for a cause that many people are too embarrassed to even talk about.
Yes, November is about to come to an end and we will enter December, a month centered around gifts, but isn’t it nice to know that it as easy as throwing away your razor to support a cause? With the spirit of Movember in mind, let’s enter into December with the intention of giving rather than receiving. Little things like putting a dollar in that Red Cross tin or checking yes at the Harris Teeter when they ask if you want to donate will make the holiday all the more sweet!
So next time you see a bearded man or hairy legged woman on the street give them a high five! They are a walking reminder of the giving nature of the human spirit and an indication of the good that we can all do with a little effort!
