Ringing In the New Year

As we say goodbye to 2011 and give a warm welcome to 2012, most of us are probably considering New Years Resolutions to ring in the new year.  The new year gives us the perfect opportunity to get a fresh start and to set new goals for ourselves.  Here are five ways to start your year off right:1. Be realistic.
Make your New Years Resolutions something you can actually achieve.  Write your resolution down on a piece of paper and make a commitment to follow through. Hang it up somewhere you can see it and be reminded of it daily. It’s good to be a dreamer and reach for the stars, but if you set your goals too high, you may become frustrated. Set goals realistically, so you will be even more proud of yourself when you reach and maybe even surpass your original goal.
2. Be proactive.
Commit to planning.  It’s easy to slip into a pattern of procrastination, so this year, get yourself set up with a brand new planner and keep on top of your work.  A new year is the perfect fresh start you need to make small changes like organizing your schedule.  You’ll love how refreshed and less-stressed you’ll feel when you’re prepared.
3. Say yes to something you would usually say no to.
A boss of mine once told me that this was on her New Years Resolution list and it was something I had never thought of before.  She told me that it really opens up possibilities for business success.  If you take the occasional risk, the rewards often pay off in the long run.  It’s a matter of taking a new approach that you would have once shot down.  Try it out!
4. Set time on your schedule for yourself.
Schedule relaxation time for yourself and fill that time doing things you absolutely love.  Our busy schedules tend to get in the way of “me-time.” If you make a commitment to set time aside for yourself this year, it will help you decompress.  Instead of just running yourself to exhaustion, take a minute to breathe.  Whether it’s a bubble bath, going for a jog, or watching a movie with a bowl of popcorn, set time aside for this.  Sometimes you need to shut off the mental clock in order to refuel.
5. Learn something new.
Keep your life fresh and exciting.  It may be rock climbing, playing a new instrument, anything! Expanding and opening up your life to new things  is fun and helps you remain focused.  Nobody likes to feel like they’re stuck in a rut, so pull yourself out of your daily grind and try something you never have before.
